I'm staying with a friend while I'm shopping for a house. He moved to
the Hermitage area a little over a year ago. While ordering phone
service he asked the distance to the CO - they said 38k feet, way out
of DSL range. He mentioned to the order taker that DSL was certainly
out of the question. "Oh no, we have 6 Mbit DSL available!"

Turns out the DSLAM box is just 900 feet away, fed by fiber from the
CO. And it truly is 6 megabits down. But that's not good enough.
Last summer the phone people started digging just across the street,
and added in another curbside box. In the process they cut the
primary phone line to the house and I had a chance to talk with the
guys who repaired it. Yes, the new box is for u-verse.

The new curbside box is up now and u-verse is being installed here a
week from today, and the neighbor across the street already has it.
It's going from 900' to the "CO" down to just 400'. The modem does 25
megabits down, 15 of which are reserved for the TV service. DSL is
going to be 10 Mb down, 1.5 Mb up - I'm *so* envious!

The DVR comes with the package and yeah, it's 4 SD channels, 2 HD
channels, or 1 HD + 2 SD incoming. The DVR is supposed to be able to
stream up to 4 HD output simultaneously through Ethernet. Video
compression is H.264, and at 7.5 Mbits, HD is a pretty good
experience. Timing being what it is, when I find my own place, it
will no doubt be in a neighborhood BellSouth is totally ignoring....

But I'll write more when it gets installed. At this point we don't
know if static IPs are being offered, as the emphasis is all on the TV
end.
