Two weeks ago I called them and they did not offer a break in the
rate. But two months ago we were going to drop Dish and the wife
talked them down to $7.95 a month.
A couple of weeks ago someone at out Friday morning Bible study asked
to report on my experience of getting U-verse. Following is what I sent
out this morning:
*******************************
Joel asked me a few weeks ago to write up my experience of going
from Comcast to the new competing AT&T U-verse service. Since I also
have had experience with Bell South DSL, I will include that. So here
it is.
We had it installed three weeks ago. The door to door salesmen
seemed very knowledgeable. BUT, did not tell us about the extra $10
per month for HD service and found out later that he put on a good show.
COST:
Comcast Internet only = $64
Dish ~100 channels = $7.95 / month
DSL Ultra is 1.5 Mbs up and 256 down. ($33/mo)
DSL Extreme is 3 Mbs up and 384 down. ($38/mo)
DSL Extreme 6 is 6 Mbs up and 512 Kbps down. ($43/mo)
U-verse 100 channels = $44, 200 = $59 , 300 = $79, 400 = $99
U-verse HD = $10
U-verse Internet, slowest to fastest ( got the second one) = $33,
$38, $43, $55, $ 65.
TV:
Choice of channels is about the same, but U-verse has local channels
as standard. Both have extra premium channels. I think U-verse has
more standard HD channels. DSL does not have TV, but there is always
Dish which has been good.
INTERNET SPEED:
U-verse is fastest, then DSL Extreme, last Comcast. Comcast is the
only one that you have to share your connection with 100+ others, hence
can really slow down when others are awake.
ROUTER:
Both DSL and U-verse have an all in one router / modem. You are
stuck with no selection. The U-verse router really sucks, but has
pretty graphics. Comcast is best since you can buy your own.
Wireless on the U-verse does have a lot more range. But takes
forever to connect.
UP TIME:
Since it has been only three weeks with U-verse, this is unknown.
But there are fiber optics to the entrance of the neighborhood, which is
good.
Bell South DSL is great, always up. Comcast has a lot of
problems. Dish has some problems, but is short lived.
SERVICE:
U-verse is great. How about less than 3 hours to have a service
man to your house, with an apology that they took so long!
Dish and DSL are good.
Comcast is bad, really bad. No more of this from Comcast, "We do
not support your system", then they hang up. See ,

THE STORY & COMMENTS:
Comcast blocked e-mail port 25 last year and did not tell me.
Called and was told that I was spamming. Two days later they finally
told me to change ports. Then spent three more weeks trying to get
port 25 unblocked. They ran me around in circles. Finally gave up,
finally getting my e-mail back.
Then I got U-verse. Also found e-mail port 25 blocked. Called
U-verse help. After a minuet she found out that I did not have the
e-mail client in her help book. So she just asked me to open the
configuration area. Asked which port. Told her 25. She then
unblocked it in about 15 seconds. Total time on phone was about 2 1/2
minuets!!!
A few days after getting U-verse, the HD stopped working. Called
the help desk at 1:30 PM. Told that a man would be out between 2 and 4
pm. They called at 2:30 pm saying he would be late. He showed up at
4:15 pm. In 4 minuets found that we did not have HD in the package.
He had it added in and turned on in a few minuets.
Speed: Faster than the Church DSL. The DSL I have found is faster
than Comcast. Speed stays the same all day long. No throttle back like
Comcast. The Wife does not notice a difference.
