I think if I were going for purely a NAS, I'd go for one of the embedded 
solutions rather than a full blown PC. I think Michael Chaney was saying 
that the World Book seemed like a possibly decent consumer-level 
solution a few months ago and it runs Linux.

For a more full-blown solution, Linux works well and Samba is fairly 
straightforward to set up.
