Short, inaccurate answer: It's a Ron Paul thing. Longer answer: It's coming from the people who want to restore the Gold Standard (i.e., currency backed by real gold), which in turn appear to come mostly from the Austrian school of economics (Mises Institute, etc.). Or, as the investment community calls them, "gold bugs".
