OK. So I managed to get Google Voice hooked up to sipgate.com (free SIP phone number for incoming calls, cheap outgoing*) so I could make real calls using my N800 whenever I'm in WIFI range. I tested it at home and it worked fine from behind my Linksys router. The SIP client STUN setting (anti-NAT scheme) was set on auto. The N800 SIP client is a little cumbersome but there's a dedicated Google Voice app. called Dial Central that works well with it and I was up and running dialing and receiving free voice calls!
Unfortunately, my first real world attempt failed miserably today when I tried to connect from behind a client's Watchguard Firebox SSL 100 firewall. They're probably not going to modify any settings on my behalf but I know I can SSH from there to my box at home... Any ideas on how I can set up some kind of proxy at home so I can tunnel N800 SIP Client <--ssh--> Linux at home <--SIP/STUN--> Sipgate? ------------------------------------------------------------------ *With Google Voice the sipgate deal becomes free incoming AND outgoing because Google Voice makes both ends of a call appear to be incoming. (You select the number then it rings you back before ringing the other party.) PS. The preferred method for this trick used to be Gizmo5.com's free SIP phone # but the very day I went to set this up was the day Google bought them up and temporarily closed new registrations! I'll probably switch "back" to Gizmo once Google opens it back up. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "NLUG" group.
