The IBM defense makes a lot of sense now. Just saying.
Yes, they make some good 1U servers, but so does Dell.
Disclosure: I have worked for Dell in the past, and have had my hands
on more Dell servers
professionally than any other manufacturer's gear.

Unless I am a complete blathering idiot, I don't consider a 1U server
a mainframe by any regard.

Wrong for values of right :-)

If you trace back why IBM was 10% higher in sales in Q3, I'll bet it's
largely due to the health care
industry.

As Critch pointed out, they are expensive and the workforce behind
them are older.
If IBM were really serious about a long term mainframe mainstay then
they would be back off of the Hercules project.

This is why IBM doesn't get it.

You can't maintain for a long period of time an expensive product line
and kick the ladder away from
anyone-- especially young-- wanting to learn their tech. This didn't
matter so much back in the heyday
of mainframes, but open source and free software did change the world.

I am completely unaware of any way for that is legally safe for a
hobbyist to independently learn
how to run a mainframe short of working for a fortune 500 or large
health care company.

Who's to say that IBM won't assert other patents against other
software projects including Linux in the future.
Yes I am aware that IBM has invested billions into Linux-- thank you IBM.

However, they do **appear** to suffer from the large corporate giant
syndrome where one hand doesn't know what the other is doing.
