For Windows machines in the labs at the college, we have Deep Freeze
from Faronics.  The user can save files on the network, or in an
unprotected pseudo-partition.  Other than that, every reboot is a
clean machine.

Otherwise, I strongly suggest Adblock Plus with Firefox.
Mother-in-law gets nailed on a regular basis, and she only uses her
computer for facebook games.  I'm convinced it's coming through the
ads.
