Linux Engineer Job Profile and Description

The Linux/Unix Administrator will cooperate with others in an Operations
team as we work to define architecture of new solutions and
manage/maintain existing production systems. The team currently supports
Windows, Ubuntu Linux, BSD and Windows operating systems.  The Linux
engineer is versatile with his experience in technology.  He is able to
configure and manage the Linux operating system but also manage the
underlying infrastructure.  He can configure storage volume mappings to
the OS instance, Network Connectivity (inclusive of routing) and can
manage middleware solutions deployed into the operating system.

We seek an engineer that can thrive in a fast paced operations
environment.  This person will aid in the design, deployment,
analysis/troubleshooting and maintenance of Linux environments
(primarily).  The person should have experience in architecture/design
methodologies and while also being aware of open source and commercial
solutions.  This is a critical aspect of success in the FAMC technical
environment; we adopt first stable solutions but also include open
sources systems as part of our evaluation cycles and do deploy them in
certain capacities.

The candidate must be professional in appearance and demeanor.  He is
conscious of impact to end users and takes necessary precautions both
architecturally and operationally to ensure that impact is minimized.
He/she must understand the importance of change control processes and
root cause analysis as we work to ensure the environment is stable and
reliable.

Duties and Responsibilities
#       Manage Linux environments through capacity management, problem
#       management and overall operational stability of solutions hosted
#       by the systems.
#       Trends the systems to identify issues before the create impact
#       into the production environment
#       Manages middleware solutions such as:
o       JBOSS
o       Zimbra and email routing and management
o       Tomcat
o       Apache
o       MySQL
o       DNS
o       LDAP solutions inclusive of Linux integration with Active
o       Directory
o       NFS and CIFS via SAMBA or other solutions
#       Experience working and managing VMWare Virtual Clusters
#       including
o       Provisioning guests
o       IP and network configurations
o       Installation and configuration of new VM hosts
o       Migration of guests from cluster to cluster
o       High availability capabilities of VMware

Skills and Specifications
#       Advanced Linux knowledge, 3 - 5 years experience in dealing with
#       BSD, Ubuntu, Debian or other Linux distributions
#       Knowledge of Linux file systems and permissions structures
#       Performance management and tuning of VMware and Linux systems.
#       Including best practices in monitoring and alerting to identify
#       potential issues before they escalate to outages
#       Linux upgrades and patches.
#       Security best practices in both Linux and middleware deployments
#       (e.g. apache, JBoss).
#       Knowledge of Dell systems hardware is desirable.
#       Understanding of network switching and firewalling is desirable.
