I don't know what the curent usage numbers are, but IMO the biggest thing holding mariaDB back is that the vast number of people who use MySQL just are not aware of MariaDB. Once there is awareness of MariaDB, there is a much more likely adoption of that fork. MySQL + PHP is kind of like QBASIC for the 21st century. It has the lowest common denominator of technical talent using it. That's not to say only morons are using it, but keep in mind that far more less tech savvy people are using it than any other db, save possibly MS SQL or technically Jet DB (access) if you want to get pedantic.
