Interesting series of posts on this blog. He does do a bit of 'Chicken Little' posting to try to run you off, but on the whole, he points to the downside, and how to build one efficently if you want to build one (or 3) anyway. It isn't all down. He did build it for a specific reason, and it worked amazingly well for what it was built for. Even the comments are well worth reading. .. I am looking forward to them completing the series of posts, but given how long it has been, I'm not holding my breath. Basically, goods are it is cheap/TB (about <$120/T when he built). The 'kit' for the server that is 'everything except disks' seems to be a good option. He does seem to be paranoid about building a wiring harness, but after doing a few, I understand why. Even with 2 power supplies, they are NOT redundant. So it would be nice if that was re-engineered. Price/T will be a bit more than you see from their estimates. Also getting drives for near the BlackBlaze prices is rough. One way to increase reliability of this server is also to buy 'enterprise' level drives. Instead of the consumer 3T for $120-150, the $180-600/drive drives are demonstrated more reliable. Now whether they are worth the 2x to 4x price, is questionable. ><> ...
