The right way to do this is with an SMS gateway. The cheapest option is a single port GSM modem (or CDMA, if you like). A few cellphone providers (like mine, T-Mobile) have an interesting plan, where the first 2 lines on an account cost the regular price and any additional lines on the account are free.
