Elijah and Jeff,

Many thanks for a fantastic presentation. No need to be concerned about the targeting as Elijah hit the mark square with the kind of "geek-out" we really enjoy. We (NLUG) will make sure to post the follow up information Jeff provided to the NLUG web site so that all may partake.

Speaking for myself, there is no love for Larry Ellison and his business practices, no matter how good Oracle the database is (and it is quite good). We all groaned when Oracle took out Sun for the future of MySQL, VirtualBox, Java and all the Sun software. Elijah's comments on the Sun engineering exodus piques my interest in what Joyent and its larger community are doing.

Keep us posted. Good things happening!

Why Joyent SmartOS?
http://wiki.smartos.org/display/DOC/Why+SmartOS+-+ZFS%2C+KVM%2C+DTrace%2C+Zones+and+More

SmartOS gives you several advantages. They include:

  *
ARC for caching of files in memory on each server
    * CPU bursting for flash incidents that require more compute - no
    cost for this.
    * Live resize w/o reboot of RAM (up and down) via API or
    my.joyentcloud.com dashboard
    * Full and deep integration of Cloud Analytics. Linux does not have
as deep of integration as SmartOS does.
    * SmartOS is still UNIX so your typical LAMP stack works the same way.
    * SmartOS security patching is done by Joyent as the maintainer of
the OS. Patching of Linux would be your responsibility
    * SmartOS machines can come preloaded with LAMP stack and has a
large repository of additional packages precompiled.
    * many GNU tools come loaded to give it the ease of use that Linux has

I'd be thrilled if we had 25-30. You may have the time you need. Our
group is good at getting restless when they've had enough so we'll all
    know when it's time.
