Hello Howard,

It doesn't hurt to have a separate /var and /var/log partition.
At least then you can go trim logs, or errant web stuff (which I have
seen happen).  It is a bit more of a problem when initially loading the
box, but that is likely not a major problem.

You might be able to add another drive and move a few partitions over,
instead of reloading everything.  I am sure Curt and some of the other
guys could weigh in on that.

You could even write a routine (without loading nagios) to flag when
things are getting a bit tight.  With the size of the drives being much
larger in recent years I have certainly taken the shortcut of not making
all of the partitions.  That has also bit me on occasion.

I would think (hope) you could still log in as root and do some damage
control.  At least with some of the distributions I have dealt with they
will have a small amount of reserve.
