A little more research said to use ext4 but to turn off journaling,
   sudo tunefs -O ^has_journal /dev/sda1

in /etc/syscntl.default or in a /etc/syscntl.d/ file

set vm.swappiness=0

set the device scheduler to 'noop' for the sd-drive, in the /etc/rc.local
before the exit put
  echo noop > /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler

set /tmp and /var/tmp to tmpfs (but they will be wiped out at reboot)
 ... like in /etc/fstab
  tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults,noatime,mode=1777 0 0
but remember, each of the file systems will be 'cleaned' at each reboot.
Sun systems used to do this, but I had users get mad about it. Sun had
/var/tmp as persistant storage and just /tmp would be 'cleaned'.

set any swap partition to NOT be on the SSD
or turn it off and run without swap

If you have multiple devices, it would be nice to use different schedulers
for different drives, but I am not sure I see how.
