The problem with wordpress-mu (which is now part of wordpress proper) is that the various blogs have to be subdomains. So if I install wordpress as "wp.com" all of the blogs have to be "whatever.wp.com". There are ways to get around this, but while putzing with my installation it quickly became obvious that I don't have the time to learn it now.
