I ended up making a REG file that I apply to Windows 7 machines before I
try to join them to the domain. I install the registry patch, reboot,
and then they can join just fine.

I had seen the linuxquestions entry previously and I have tried a few of
the config tweaks one at a time. Still not there yet.
Of note, this is a smaller installation that only has a workgroup (yeah
- WORKGROUP). I was concerned that someone set up an Active Directory
at some point but no. Their old server is just that -- OLD.
