Oh this is going to be fun.
Customer [ was | is ] all set to replace antique gear and versions of
our software. The day before their data T1 got installed by which we
could provide them Software as a Service in place of their on-site
server, said server gasped its last breath.
Sent the hard disk to a data recovery firm. Heads crashed on media;
they tried their ministrations but no dice.
I have a set of backup tapes that I am trying to read.
Oh, did I tell you that the incumbent OS is SCO Openserver 5 and that my
colleagues don't remember if they used cpio or tar to generate backups?
When I attempt to dd data off of backup tapes, I get an immediate stop,
no records read.
I have found a program on SourceForge called Safecopy that seems to read
past that first halt. But Lord knows what random bits I have read to
disk...
Any data forensics folks in the crowd? Where the fire do I start?
Howard
