Something changed; I know not what. Thank you for the dig suggestion, Paul, as it has led me to the answer.

When originally installed, I could dig/nslookup/ping entries in our local DNS server:

ping -c 5 hp1022    #  a printer

Now, such a ping comes back with "ping; unknown host hp1022"

If I

ping -c 5 hp1022.olcinc.local

everything is cool and groovy. So I added "search olcinc.local" to /etc/resolv.conf and the short form works again.

Shall research what to do with NetworkMangler to get the search line in resolv.conf
