We bought a server from exacqVision. It's running Ubuntu 10.something LTS, boots up to the user interface in 10 seconds, very impressive.
We still have mostly analog cameras and based on a recommendation bought ten Axis M7014 4-channel analog encoders. The new IP cameras are all Samsung, most of which are 1080P at 15 FPS with wide dynamic range. One of our film students made a time-lapse video of the setup, operation and teardown of a 200 ton crane that just happened to park in front of one of our HD cameras: http://youtu.be/Ok0DNBYh7ws - I think it's fun to watch at HD resolution (and it's the first video I've posted to YouTube.) How Exacq makes money is you pay roughly $115 one time for each IP license. The 4-channel Axis encoders require just one license, which was a big selling point for us. IP cameras each pay for a license. There's an annual support fee after the initial 3-year deal with the server, it's pretty reasonable. exacqVision works with 1100 or so camera models, so we have the ability to add just about anything we take a fancy to. We have been pleased with the Samsung cameras to date. Interestingly, the same server hardware from Exacq is offered either with Windows 7 or Ubuntu. Running Windows the maximum combined data rate from the cameras and encoders is 300 Mbits/second. The same hardware running Ubuntu is rated for 450 Mbits/second. Don't know why, but I will not complain. Clients can run on Linux, Windows or OS X. Mobile devices include Android and iOS. Any number of users can run the client software; there's no extra fee per user, etc. I've taken training on the software, and it's fair to say we're quite happy with our selection.
