I really hate to have to say this, but I'm not finding a topic to present.
A couple of months back Chris-the-boss remarked on some programming project
I was embarked on that it was 'really cool' and should be the topic of an
NLUG presentation.

If either of us could remember which project it was, THAT would be helpful.

I just looked through (and updated) the spreadsheet of the various Perl
scripts/programs I've written at Watkins. The number is somewhere between
250 and 300, which surprised me. I'm not sure that a presentation on how
I'm now controlling all the exterior lights on campus is a particularly
compelling subject. (They turn on 30 min. before sunset and turn off 30
min. after sunrise. Thank you, are there any questions?)

The big project for me over the summer was the transition from our Trixbox
PBX to the 'new' Elastix PBX. Many dark rabbit holes, finally some beams
of light which weren't oncoming trains. I did have a big BFO (blinding
flash of the obvious) in the process. Neither Trixbox nor Elastix actually
lets you listen to your already-existing name/busy/unavailable voicemail
recordings. You may review a new recording, but you can't listen to the
existing ones, especially the 'busy' message. I wrote some software that
shows the extensions and names. If you click on an extension number it
brings up the outgoing recordings, if any - converting them to MP3 format
in the process.

That wasn't enough. Chris said what it should really do is send Email to
each person who is missing a recording. OK, a new program does that and
will have an auto-nag feature (I LOVE those) to keep pestering until people
make the recordings. It attaches any existing recordings (as MP3s) along
with a PDF 'splaining how to make the recordings.

Still, I don't think any of the PBX machinations amount to an effective and
interesting presentation.

We have Ubiquiti's UniFi access points on campus, now a total of 21.
They're a mix of 802.11n, 802.11a/n and 802.11ac. They all run BusyBox
Linux, and we have been battling some 5.8 GHz Enterprise WPA2
authentication issues. Chris suggested I write a program to reboot them
once a day, just as a prophylactic measure. OK, I discovered the Perl
Net::SSH::Expect module which allows a login with user name/password and
rebooting ensued.

After poking around in BusyBox I chanced on ifconfig (anybody ever heard of
that?!!) and thought it would be a Really Cool Thing™ to report on receive
errors and bandwidth. Yes, it turns out a couple of APs at the dorms need
to have their wall jacks re-terminated, or perhaps moved to the next closer
jack. Good news, lesson learned. Since it was Thanksgiving weekend and no
one could tell me not to, I wrote some software to send a daily Email
report on the bandwidth for each SSID on each AP. Looks nice, we'll learn
a lot from it. Still, not a compelling presentation, I think.

I hope someone is available to give a presentation. So sorry to flake out
at the last minute like this.
