Just to clarify things. As far as I know, Linux at this point won't run
*full* .NET natively still (I'll try to clarify what I mean later).
Mono is the project which does that at this point still. The fact that the
.NET Core and other core components of the .NET eco-system (most recently
the .NET CLR) went open-source on GitHub, just gives the _possibility_ of a
full fledged or much better Linux integration. You won't find .NET native
Linux packages for your favorite distro right now. That's when I think it
can be said that it's fully cross platform (hence, that would be my
clarification). Like you can install a Java JDK today.

It'll certainly help a lot to the Mono project. I'm curious what other
project will benefit.
I'm a little skeptic about various big companies who want to support Linux.
Maybe one day Microsoft will be the savior of Linux?
A couple of years ago it was very promising how Valve got behind Linux for
example, I hoped more results than what we could finally see (although I
believe they spent a lot of effort!). It looks like Linux still needs some
more support to reach a critical mass. Companies are reluctant, and
sometimes backing out.

Microsoft also has many Open Source Software Labs across the globe.

Microsoft's Linux support in Azure is another topic and more or less
independent of the recent .NET "open sourcing". Azure rather started as a
PaaS (from top) and moved to IaaS from there. I remember back around 2012 I
already did a test with an Azure VM hosting Tomcat and J2EE app. As an IaaS
provider they have to pick up Linux.
The latest trends are the container formats (like Docker). Microsoft has a
very good effort to make sure that .NET based solutions will function and
integrate well into various containers. That doesn't necessarily require
.NET to be open source, but it can help the cause.

Also, if we stay on Windows and look at IIS, the recent generations of
ASP.NET platform also moving towards being platform independent.

I don't want to promote anything here. But I'm just as familiar with the
Microsoft eco-system as the Linux or Java one, and I'd like to let you know
my view of the topic.

Thanks,
Csaba
