At looking at specs, it looks like the communications with the card is bi-directional. It appears to need a key to get the 'sector' of information back. There seems to be some arduino scripts for doing this, but getting around the getty like you and Tilghman are relating does seem to be the required first step, or change the config so as to not run a getty on that tty port. But that is just me blue-skying from the sidelines.
