On the software-defined storage side, Gluster offers "dispersed volumes"
which offers 1.5x cost for replication via erasure coding on JBOD (instead
of the 2x cost for RAID1 replication). One benefit of gluster is that you
can also setup a geo-replicated off-site destination which can act as a
backup.
