Is it beeping a bunch at post, like memory not found? At startup is it showing full memory in the console output?
If your memory is bad it should probably boot but you'll notice random kernel panics and inconsistent performance. If it boots you may have enough time to create a memtest86 USB stick. Agreed though that a bootable USB stick (or CD-ROM) with memtest86 is exactly what you need.
