The first problem that comes to mind with keeping internal folder and
msgnumber references is that it all falls apart when you use "folder
-pack" or "refile". The only option would be to scan _all_ messages
when folder orders and contents are played with. I've got about 44.5k
messages managed by nmh right now - it could take some time to search
through all these for cross references.
Maybe you could assign a unique reference to each message and track by
that. Hmm, perhaps the Message-ID :-)
FWIW, I use glimpse to index my mail - works _really_ well...
