I am the maintainer of that port...I already have a bunch of make
variables you can set to control what options get passed to configure
in there. I could easily change it to allow selection of POP or APOP
(or whatever). In the meantime, you could workaround it by editing the
Makefile in the port to have the appropriate --enable option instead of
the --enable-nmh-pop that's in there, then rebuild it.
