I just tried an experiment in my .mh_profile:

#: eFaxes come as octet-stream (with filename=*.tif, but nmh ignores that?)
#: ImageMagick exits gracefully if it can't figure out what type we have,
#: so it seems like a good default "show-er" (for X, at least...):
mhshow-show-application/octet-stream: %p/usr/X11R6/bin/display '%F'

It seems to work pretty well on arbitrary application/octet-stream
content.  Even without seeing the filename extension, "display" seems
to check the image header and "do the right thing" -- even with
gzipped content, like gzipped TIFF files.  Comments, anyone?
