One more followup :-) It occurs to me that those auto-generated tarballs will require some extra stuff that not everyone will have. Specifically, you'll need autoconf, automake, and [f]lex. For the distribution tarballs you don't need those things (the "make dist" target automatically runs all of the autotools and includes the output in the distribution). I'm glad to make distribution tarballs for anyone who asks.
