The mhpath man page said this: Message numbers greater than the highest existing message in a folder as part of a range designation are replaced with the next free message number.
And had this example, when the last message in the folder is 6: % mhpath 2001 /r/phyl/Mail/foo/7 However, the actual behavior of mhpath is: % mhpath 2001 mhpath: message 2001 out of range 1-6 even with the initial revision in the source code repository.
