AFAICT ... that seems to be valid Unicode. I can view it fine and it shows up as the appropriate characters. This gets into complicated, non-nmh territory; a lot of the specifics here depend on your specific version of nmh, your configured character set, the terminal program you are using AND how it is configured. I believe that (except for a few corner cases) nmh does the Right Thing when presented with this email.
