But, the fdqn hostname is already a literal in the nmh email draft by virtue of needing to include a "from: " line before it reaches postfix. The mh-format(5) reference mentioned mts.conf somewhere, and I found that localname was unset in my present mts.conf. In contrast, localname was set to my domain name (no brief hostname) in my crashed host's mts.conf. I altered my mts.conf to be like the crashed host. Now everything nmh works again on the replacement host. Thanks folks!
