So I am confused; was Cy's original bug caused by ZFS, or Michael's?

Looking back at the mailing list archives, it seems we never found out
a cause of Michael's issue. C0 80 is technically invalid UTF-8, but
it does decode to a NUL character (00) so I could see a naive encoder
converting a NUL to those bytes. I have a difficult time believing that
nmh could generate that out of nowhere, but I've been wrong before.
