Hi Lisa,

To all colleagues on the mailing list: sorry for spamming, probably only
the last paragraph is important to you.

Some software 'calls home' when it launches. This way, the software company
could stop a client from launching the software on more cpus than is
permitted.

As far as I know, the restriction for nonmem is purely contractual, but
there are no actual restrictions in place.
It seems Novartis could implement the contractual restriction of "do not
run nonmem on more than 100 cpu cores at the same time" by configuring this
in the cluster scheduling software (for SLURM, see
https://slurm.schedmd.com/licenses.html)

I am sure icon could also develop such a "call home" functionality, but you
may have a lot of protest from people who are 'occasionally' exceeding
their license terms (eg to run a bootstrap of the final model). I would
also not like it if Nonmem needs an internet connection to run, or would
stop running when eg I change my hard drive.
A similar system was briefly in place for Simulo, and was quickly adapted
because of all the annoyances and hassle.

Best regards,
Ruben Faelens
