You only need to pay a Licence fee to receive live TV signals, radio is free and you can watch DVD/VCR over the aerial connection to your TV without a licence. The licence is for the premises not the device.

This of course means that if you watch live streaming TV from the internet on a computer you need to have a TV licence for the premises.

Compared to the cost of cable or satellite fees it is minimal.
