Hi,

I have what I think is a fairly common scenario: infrequent big bills
that I want to save up for over the year.

For example, I have two big expenses for my car: registration and
insurance. Lets say they're both about 600 dollars, due on July and
August respectively. That's 1200 per year, and I would like to
allocate 100 per month to that bucket. But the expected spending is
not 100 per month, it's actually zero per month, except two months
where it's 600 per month.

If I set it up so that the spending plan is 100 monthly, then it flows
100 each month to that bucket, which is good. But the graph is all
wrong. It says I've got left over money each month except on two
months it says I've significantly overspent.

If I set it up so that the spending plan is on monthly (or yearly) and
I set up the individual months with 0,0,0,...,600,600,0,0,... then the
spending plan appears correct on the graph, but the 'allocate income'
doesn't put any money into those buckets until that month is reached.

So, as I see it, there are two different values here: "how much do I
want to put into a bucket each month" and "how much do I want to spend
each month". And it seems that MoneyWell treats them the same - when
they only need to be the same on average.

And so we need to choose between the trade-offs above - good graphing,
or putting money away each month. For the simple case above, I just
put the money away each month and live with the graph problems - the
costs are known so I can't really under/over spend. But in a different
scenario, such as "Gifts" it would be very helpful if we could have
both work. Eg: I might want to plan to spend certain amounts on each
month based on Christmas, birthdays, anniversary, etc.. but because
it's discretionary, I need the graphs to help prevent me from
overspending.

Thanks for reading this. Am I misunderstanding something? Or is this a
way that MoneyWell could be improved?

Pete

(p.s. This is a very helpful program!!)
