I figured out my issues with my buckets not adding up to my bank
balance.
Here were the contributing factors:
(1) I had done a few transfers between my savings and checking
accounts, without putting them into any buckets. I don't like to
think of my savings account as "spending money" -- that's what the
checking account is for. So when I moved money back and forth between
these two accounts, it affected my checking balance (duh!) without
affecting the totals in my buckets (doh!).
My solution to this problem is to track every transfer between
checking and savings by flagging the checking side of the transaction
with an appropriate bucket. For me, that's usually my "Other income"
bucket. But that part of it doesn't really matter too much and can be
up to personal taste.
The point is that if these transfers aren't reflected in the buckets,
then you need to think of the money in the buckets as being money that
is split across the two bank accounts. Not that that is a bad think,
it's just something I don't want to do.
(2) I had an 8 cent outstanding flow in one of my hidden buckets
(doh!). This was a bit maddening ("Where's that lousy 8 cents??!")
until I remembered that I had some hidden buckets. Sure enough, there
was a hidden bucket with 8 cents sitting in it.
These tips may not represent a complete inventory of where to look in
order to get your bank balances and the sum of your buckets in
harmony, but it got my simple setup (i.e. I pay all my bills out of my
checking account) straightened out.
Thanks,
Rick Reynolds
