I had a similar situation this past summer. Although my account was
closed and I was given a new card, I actually did not create a new
account in MoneyWell.

I continued to enter all transactions from my bank statement (you can
use either the paper copy, or electronic, or even downloaded
transactions) with the exception of the balance transfer amount. If
you are downloading transactions, you can just update the account
information to ensure that the information is being downloaded from
the correct credit card, and then delete the balance transfer.

This may be a simpler method.

If you do want to start a new account in your MoneyWell document, then
do this instead:
1. In your new credit card, assign the starting balance as 0.
2. In your old credit card, create a transaction for the amount of
the balance transfer and assign it as a transfer in MoneyWell from
your old account to your new account.

Your old credit card balance should now be zero, and your new credit
card balance should be the amount of the balance transfer.

Grace to you,
Blair
