So I have a CC balance that predates MW. I go to the grocery store and spend $100 and put it on the CC. in MW I put this purchase in the groceries bucket. I get my statement and send the CC company $200 as check number 4321, $100 for the groceries charge and $100 toward the interest and principle of the previous balance.
