I'm not entirely sure, but I think part of how it displays has to do with your regional settings in your System Preferences. Mine is set to European and my negative amounts show with minus sign in front of them. I have seen the parenthesis way, but it makes no sense to me. Because I can see red and green, I don't know if the minus-sign makes it clearer than parenthesis would.... I guess black/red would work, though personally I like the green and red...
