*Front Page TIB roundtable: Party politics responsible for corruption in varsities *By Staff Reporter Thu, 8 Feb 2007, 12:18:00 Speakers at a round table in the city yesterday observed that party politics among the teachers and students, governmental intervention, lack of accountability, political appointment and in absence of legal action against the corrupt persons is increasing massive corruption in public universities of the country. According to the country's top scholars amendment of the university ordinance, introduction of proper monitoring systems, evaluation of faculty members from the students, golden handshake of the unqualified and access teachers and employees is a must for eradicating the grab corruption and misrules from the public universities. Presided over by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Trustee Board Chairman Prof Mujaffar Ahmed, many university professors voiced their valuable opinions regarding the prevailing corruptions at the roundtable organised by TIB at the CIRDAP auditorium in the morning. Alleging the public universities of appointing 'voters instead of teachers' for teacher politics, University Grant Commissions (UGC) Chairman Prof Asaduzzaman stressed on unified regulatory law for all the public universities. Referring many limitations and weakness in recruiting teachers, Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Yusuf Haider voiced for the immediate amendment of the university ordinance. Former Chairman of International Relations Department of Dhaka University Prof. Dr Imtiaj Ahmed said, research and proper teaching should be the two main components of the university. But there is no accountability here about teaching, he alleged. He suggested that the professors, failing to show any publication in journals during five years, should be made to say goodbye with golden handshake for the welfare of the university. Indicating some incidents of sexual harassments and gender discriminations by the male teachers and staffs the immediate past Chairperson of the International Relations Department of Dhaka University Prof Dr Amena Mohsin reiterated her demand for a body to deal against the sexual harassments in the public universities. Seniority of the teachers must be defined on the basis of his or her research publication in the international recognized journals, she said. Prof Amena Mohsin questioned the awarding or PhD degrees and introducing new departments without their required faculty members. Professor Mohammad Ali and Prof Moinul Islam of Chittagong University, Prof. Mohabbat Khan of Public Administration Department of Dhaka University, Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University Dr Mosharaf Hossain, former Vice Chancellor of Chittagong University Prof. Mohammad Ali, former DG of Bangla Academy Prof. Syed Anwar Hossain, and sociologist Prof. Sadeka Halim also spoke at the roundtable. Mohammad Yahya Akhter presented a paper on "Corruption in Public University: Features and Solution" at the roundtable.
