It is a long tradition of DUTA to support AL blindly. No wonder they have
resorted to blackmailing tactics to force the present Caretaker Government of
Bangladesh to get their favored leader released. These teachers already have
tarnished the Image of their profession. They were followed by the 200 teachers
of Rajshahi University for going on their 'casual leave' simultaneously
sympathizing and expressing sorrow for the detention of their favored leader.
We do hope that let Khaleda Zia also face the music of justice if she is also
implicated in any such criminal case(s). Why make exception when our whole
nation was smeared with the obnoxious and dubious distinction of becoming
champion in corruption index perception matter by the T.I. for 5th consecutive
times?

"The DU teachers abstained from taking classes as part of their two-day
programme to press their five-point demand including immediate and
unconditional release of Sheikh Hasina"

Why immediate and unconditional release of Sheikh Hasina? To those shameless
Teachers of DU just to remind you "No body is above the LAW" that applies to
DUTA!
Your business is to teach student, not politics!

  True identity of DUTA?
Ending their 2 day program on 22 July- wearing black badges on the 21st and a
half day work stoppages on the 22nd- the Dhaka University Teachers Association
(DUTA) General Secretary (GS) Prof. Anwar Hossain talked to a private TV
channel in the evening, wherein, he demanded three things from the Caretaker
Government (CG): one, immediate lifting of emergency from the country, two,
holding of general election without delay, and three, immediate resignation of
the Law Adviser Barrister Moinul Hosein.

Earlier on the 20th July the GS while announcing the action programme for two
days, stated that they had taken up the action programmes from 'moral' stand.
That was appreciable. But the three- point demand he made on the 22nd July went
much beyond their moral stand clearly into political arena, which is not
permissible under the Emergency rules in force in the country since 10 January
2007.

One must wonder if the GS by placing his three-point demand to the CG as
mentioned has not placed himself in the position of a political party spokesman
and possibly the DUTA as a political party! One must further wonder if he could
have behaved like that of a political party leader with legal impunity!

  DU teachers

Have you ever seen/heard Dhaka University teachers wearing a black badge to
protest corruption?

These self-serving teachers are again abusing the nation's highest
institution to score cheap political points for their own benefit. For years,
they have inflicted irreparable damage to our education system by keeping it
and its environment hostage to their political ambitions as well as their job
security.
We expect a higher ethical standard from the teachers of the country's
premier university.

The Dhaka University teacher agitators have been harming the country for the
last 25 years. By their activities they are harming the prospect of student
community. Harming education harms the nation. And anyone harming the nation is
a traitor. Do you know of another country in Europe, Asia or America where
university teachers run hartals for weeks and months every years? Do you know
of another civilised country where such sabotage goes unpunished?

In UK security services keep a close watch of all academics and student
politics. Are they fools to keep a close watch over their education
institutions? British government's war in Iraq has been opposed by academics
and students alike. But not a single academic or student body has dared to
disrupt education institutions. They all know what could happen (all done very
subtly as is the way here) if they cause any harm to the education system- the
life-blood of the nation in a highly competitive world. Please learn from other
democracies who talk the talk but never do the walk. They are however always
ready to preach to the developing world. You will have read the comments of the
Brazilian official who on hearing that foreign aviation authorities were
wanting to HELP Brazil improve its airport safety record. He asked which idiots
dared to offer HELP Brazil; all they wanted to do was to interfere in internal
affairs of Brazil, poking their nose. He warned them to get lost.
There is a lesson for the developing nations.

Bangladesh needs to expand its tertiary education ten fold. It has some 2
million in higher education but this needs to increase to 20 or 30 million in
the next 15 years. Even then it will not reach the level of developed world or
Japan, South Korea or China. Please legislate to prevent education being used
by agitators to harm the national development. Education should be treated like
national security as in other nations. There is no time to waste if we are to
join China and East Asia in the 21st century.

Intel agencies grill DU teachers
Staff Correspondent

Members of intelligence agencies on Friday night questioned some
senior teachers of Dhaka University about their protest programme
against the arrest of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and
alleged harassment of the other ex-prime minister Khaleda Zia.

The intelligence personnel during the meeting on the Dhaka
University Teachers' Club premises insisted that the teachers should
call off the programme, Harun-or-Rashid, dean of the DU social
sciences faculty, told New Age.

He said they inquired whether the teachers had consulted the
government before taking the two-day programme consisting of a half-
day work abstention and wearing black badges. In response, the
teachers said they considered any such consultation unnecessary.

The teachers maintained that the interim government had been
behaving in a partisan way and acting beyond its constitutional
mandate. They said it was the government that forced them to take up
the protest programme, adding that their next course of action would
depend on the government's response to their demands.

The DU Teachers' Association at an emergency meeting attended by
223 members on Thursday finalised the programme.

`We took up the programme at the call of our conscience,' Harun-
or-Rashid said. He called upon the government not to go beyond its
constitutional jurisdiction and to hand over power to an elected
government soon.
