Unfortunately, I don't know of any project with much momentum at this point. FireGPG has been discontinued, and even when it was active it struggled to keep up with Gmail's frontend changes. If I'm wrong and there's a good project out there, someone please correct me.
It seems like half this problem could be solved by browsers offering API access to some simple GPG commands. If an extension/bookmarklet could call to secure browser functions to perform signing etc, that would be safe, convenient, and save users the trouble of compiling GPG separately. It also bugs me that Gmail hasn't done anything for GPG.
