thank matt, but i am still seeing unexpected behaviour. i've put a gist up 
here which shows the issue:

when i run the test using curl or a browser then i get the following result 
from url.parse, which is incorrect:

 { search: '?name=abc123+111',
  query: { name: 'abc123 111' }, // note the + has been replaced with a 
space
  pathname: '/index',
  path: '/index?name=abc123+111',
  href: '/index?name=abc123+111' }
