If this is a business app (i.e. you have some degree of load and/or budget) I'd recommend Transloadit, which is a hosted image/video service that will just do all this stuff for you. If you want to code it yourself (and aren't using Windows) I'd recommend checking out an ImageMagick wrappers, like https://github.com/rsms/node-imagemagick
