I'd written a node program that would detect if stdout was a TTY and if so, it would print an ASCII progress bar. If not, it would just print a message when it was done. I would call this program from `bash`, and `bash` was in turn called from another node program. With inherited file handles, the child could write directly to the stdout of its grand parent.

I'd found that `bash` programs were good for gluing together node programs, communicating through standard I/O.

Is there anything to replace file handle inheritance now that `customFDs` is deprecated? Given that I'm not programming for Windows, can someone tell me why file handle inheritance is bad and had to go away.

I'll accept as my answer a reading assignment. I recall there being a `gist` with Issac's rationale, but I can't find it.
