Try this for the html, loads socket.io from a CDN. (Works on my computer...)

cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/socket.io/0.9.10/socket.io.min.js"></script>
<script>
var socket = io.connect('http://localhost');
socket.on('news', function (data) {
console.log(data);
socket.emit('my other event', { my: 'data' });
});
</script>
