"this" is useful for a lot of reasons, including the examples in this chapter:

This book is free, I'm not plugging it, have no interest in plugging it.
Looks like you don't understand basic javascript, that's why I tried to point 
you into a direction that may help you. If you choose to ignore it, fine, but 
don't insult people.
Also, you should post javascript questions in javascript mailing lists, not 
here.
