Ahh, cool. So it seems like I should be able to strip that out, and
then follow the Brew instructions?

My main reason for wanting to change my setup is so I can do:

$ brew upgrade node

(I hate to admit it, but I'm not sure of an easy way to upgrade
node/npm packages/dependencies with the .pkg install).
