Adam I have a machine with Windows Vista, too. I did what Isaac said: download the .msi from Node.js, and install it. No hassle. npm is included in the installer.
Past week, I installed node 0.10, this time on a Windows 8. The only problem I detected was with npm: apparently, for many tasks, it launches "cmd /c ....
