To ensure nobody will break your code, npm has this "shrinkwrap" feature.
On larger projects its recommended to: 1. use explicit dependencies versions: f.e. 0.1.6 instead of 0.1.x 2. use npm shrinkwrap The side effect is you need to update versions manually, but this is the price for being able to decide which dependency should update or not and when to do this.
